Christmas Images

I've been out of action for a week or so due to a bout of tonsillitis, thankfully as the new year is imminent, I am feeling much better. To leave the old year on a positive note, with a thankful heart of all the blessings I have received during this year, just before the date changes to 2012, I thought I would post a couple of pretty Christmas images.

I hope that you can smile as you reflect on the last twelve months and I hope that you can look forward to the New Year with a sense of hope and optimism as to what awaits you.

I had no idea at the beginning of this year that I would become a blogger and I am very happy with what I have achieved, even the publishing of it by Shared Books. This has enabled non techno friends to enjoy it too.

Happy New Year!

A First Time For Everything, Hello Santa

What do you know? I have never had my photo taken with Santa, until today.

My daughter and I were enjoying a visit to a local shopping centre this afternoon, where we spied Santa, beautifully arrayed in crimson and lots of white fluffy trimming, sitting in his sleigh.

Next thing, I was sitting next to him trading wishes, having my photograph taken!
Here it is!

Don't we make a pretty picture? He told me that I didn't look my age - younger of course, which pleased me, Ho Ho. We could have gone to school together! He had lovely twinkly eyes!

Yes, I am a child at heart!

Delight In Disorder

As the years pass, I am amazed at how many times I find myself remembering things that my mother taught me during our time spent together. I remember with fondness, as I am no longer able to communicate with her, since she passed away in 2001, not long after September 11.

Since I left England in 1973, most of the things I remember her saying to me and teaching me would have been while I was growing up. There's a message in that, that a mothers influence in younger years can be significant.

Two strong remembrances of her were from my adult years however.
The first one from during my parent's visit to us while we were living in Sydney in 1977.
Mum watched me empty the washing from my baby poop coloured, twin tub washing machine, in the kitchen of our second floor unit, and she admonished me for not folding it. I learned that day that a moment folding washing can save several more moments ironing later on, YES, that advice I would practice and remember and I have made sure that my daughter knows it too!

A second and significant remembrance comes from Mum's passion for gardening.

Mum was always a keen gardener, which explains my love of flowers. Mum had a small, wedge shaped garden, surrounded by a tall laurel hedge, interspersed with conifers that my father kept trimmed. She loved shrubs that displayed vibrant autumn colours, she loved spring growth, summer flowers and the dark shiny leaves of the holly bush. Annual flowers, begonias, hydrangeas, Michaelmas daisies, and all kinds of spring bulbs were to be found in her garden and no matter what season there was always colour to be enjoyed. Even in winter there were crimson holly berries to contrast with snow and the dark, winter green foliage of the hedge. Blackbirds, thrushes, wrens and robins were welcomed and fed tidbits by my Mum and Dad. A delightful place for one and all, beautifully private, a place to be able to sit on the bench and enjoy a cup of coffee or afternoon tea and to enjoy the warmth of the sun for a while and contemplate life. Mum did a fine job of caring for her garden, I loved it, as did she.

Each day she would stroll around the garden and inspect everything, to see what was going on.
Usually wearing her apron, as was her habit while working in the kitchen, she would pop outside to hang out the washing or feed some cake or bread crumbs to the birds and whilst out there would make her tour of inspection. She would check up on signs of new growth, looking for buds and shoots; indeed any progress that might be visible in her collection, and be vigilant for slugs and snails, very prevalent pests in a suburban garden, invariably she would pull out a weed or two as she wandered around. A quick trip to the clothesline could easily expand to an hour or two of gardening pleasure. Little and often works for me too.

During one particular visit to my parents, who lived in Kent, Mum and I strolled around the garden talking, whilst she bent to dead head the petunias that were happily flowering over a rock wall that my dad had constructed.
She was hot on dead heading, and this is what I've inherited. She told me that the mission of an annual flower is to produce seed. The mission and joy of a gardener is to firstly produce flowers, thus is important to remove spent heads and encourage further flower production.
I have practiced this in every garden that I have had since then to great effect. As I embark on my daily Ooh and Aah sessions in my garden I think of Mum, her garden and her advice - what a rich inheritance! She is never far from my thoughts when I am in my garden.

I love all kinds of gardens, but my personal style and joy is in the sweet disorder of the cottagey look, a result of self seeding, and chaos amongst the plants, contrast this with my husband's preference for regimented lines and neatness - we have a challenge on our hands!

Although I do practice dead heading, I also allow some plants to go to seed, trusting that they will reproduce, however I have been known to gather seed heads and sprinkle them in other areas of the garden much to my husband's displeasure and frustration! I love random, he prefers ordered lines and so he looks after the vegetable patch where he can keep order.

By the by, the phrase "Sweet Disorder" comes from the poem Delight in Disorder written by Robert Herrick, a Metaphysical poet that I studied during my last years at high school and I have often savoured it over the years, as I have discovered that this is descriptive of many areas of my life. Certainly my garden, but also my craft room and my house in general, which makes it home, once again, my husband prefers order, whilst I go for the cluttered effect! Oh Dear!

The garden for me is a place of peace and beauty, a place for contemplation and memories,of my Mum and also of those friends who have given me cuttings of favourite plants,in short, total joy.

To mums out there, your words and actions may not be in vain.

Christmas Joy, Food For Thought

We experienced another storm the other evening, a walk around the garden yesterday morning revealed another clutch of those beautiful storm lilies (see previous post), More joy!

Christmas draws ever closer, how is it with you? Are you caught on a merry go round of parties, of worry over what gifts to buy, how to pay for everything, how to fit everything and everybody in?

Christmas can be such a stressful time in so many different ways. We are easily affected by the consumer orientated world in which we live in and we can be sucked into trying to meet the expectations of others, both can lead to deep dis-satisfaction and heartache.

Christmas is a wonderful time for friends and families to get together and celebrate.

I ask what do most friends and families celebrate?
Is the celebration only about the joy of getting together and sharing more gifts that we don't need or want? If so, then the joy will soon evaporate with the food and wrapping paper and the clearing up.

If it is all about children and friends and families getting together then what will Christmas look like for those who don't know any children, have any friends, or have any access to family?

On the other hand, if Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus, the Son of God, who came into the world as a baby and lived as a man, so that He could give His life as a sacrifice for our sins, so that we could have access to God through His forgiveness; then WOW wouldn't we have something amazing to celebrate? No need to max out the credit cards on unwanted gifts. No need to fret and worry about meeting the expectations of others. What sweet release! A New Year without debt! Joy and celebration every day, because the gift doesn't fade away!

It's wonderful to get together with loved ones to celebrate, when that is possible and desirable, but to important to remember to include those who are alone in celebrating the greatest gift the world has ever known, which is available to each and every one of us - PEACE WITH GOD - sins forgiven; HOPE of an eternal secure future; JOY in understanding God's GRACE and LOVE in meeting us at our greatest point of need.

Trimmings and trappings all have their place in celebrating, but, just as a birthday party needs a person with a birthday, and would be pretty pointless without him or her; so Christmas is pretty empty without the real central figure, Jesus not Santa.

How would your Christmas look this year without all the hassle?

Garden Delights

Such wonders have been on show in my garden this week, I just have to share some of them with you.

After the heavy showers Storm Lillies burst into flower, to last just one day. I found this clump to my surprise and delight early one morning, such beauty...

A clump of Day Lillies is obviously situated in a sweet spot because they are flowering like never before, again, they last one day, so lovely and a stunning colour...

While I'm at it, I may as well indulge you with another image or two, firstly, a white Penta bloom, stunning on the bush, but these dainty flowers last well in a vase...

A cheery Correopsis, one of dozens of beautiful gold flowers contrast with dark green leaves, that delight my heart. Mmmm, green and gold, very Aussie...

I thought I'd include a vibrant geranium to finish with...

I hope all this delights your heart too.

A long time ago, a man called Paul penned these words,(this is a modern paraphrase)
Fix your thoughts on what is true and good and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely, and dwell on the fine good things in others. Think about all you can praise God for and be glad about.

Go to it!

Disc Craft

Since my last blog, the temperature has increased by leaps and bounds - summer has kicked in. Phew! its 2pm and over 30 degrees inside the house, I don't like to think what is ahead of us during the next few months.

November is the time for birthdays in our family, and so my daughter and I planned a family dinner to celebrate my husband's and son's birthdays.

We were fortunate in having relatives visiting from interstate and overseas and were able to include them in the occasion. We managed to assemble eleven around the dining table for a succulent roast pork dinner with all the trimmings followed by pavlova and ice cream and a smartie covered chocolate cake.

We chose royal blue and black as the colour theme, because blue is my husbands favourite colour, and black because we planned to make use of old vinyl records as decorations.

We had inspiration to use old vinyl LPs for decorations as my husband loves his music and it seemed an inexpensive source of material. My local op shop sells records five for two dollars, what excellent value! By scanning significant family photos and sticking them over the record label, we were able to utilize the albums as table mats.

With the help of the internet, I learned how to make bowls from records, by melting them in the oven and draping them over a bowl to cool. We used these stunning creations to hold potato crisps and later Roses chocolates. Smaller records (old 45s) proved useful bowls to sit pots of dip in. With electric blue serviettes on white tablecloths, the table looked very effective. Plumes of blue and black balloons added the extra wow factor, we were very pleased with the result. The guests were fascinated by the mats and they sparked a lot of reminiscing and laughter as they read the labels on the flip sides.

Electronic candles lit the room and added ambiance to the setting, all in all a successful, delightful evening that we shall remember for sometime.

We were originally going to throw a party in a local club and invite heaps of guests to dance the night away, as we have done for previous significant birthdays, but unforeseen circumstances meant we couldn't proceed, so we scaled it down to fit our dining room. I am now the proud owner of a set of twelve vinyl bowls.Plus eleven custom made vinyl table mats. Well, I guess I'm well prepared for the next family celebration, just change the photos to suit the occasion.

Yes, I took the odd shot for you to enjoy.Maybe it will inspire you for your next get together! Have fun.

Wonderful Weekend

Last weekend was a wonderful time for me.

Its late spring here in Queensland and the days are warming up significantly. My daughter and I planned to host a morning tea on Saturday, to which I had invited a dozen or so ladies that I thought would enjoy each others company and would potentially be interested in supporting my Craft With a Mission project. This was an inspiration that I had back in august this year to make and sell handicrafts in order to raise money to give to some missionary families for Christmas, which we all know can be an expensive time of year.

I have spent every spare moment since August making items for this purpose and we had already held an afternoon tea in October that raised a significant sum towards my goal.

I rose early to decorate the deck before it got too hot, hanging bunting, putting on chair covers and laying tables, in order to be ready before our guests arrived. Whilst it takes time and effort making the place look nice, its lovely to be able to use inexpensive items (most purchased from favourite treasure stores) to transform this outdoor area into a welcoming, interesting environment in which I can spoil friends and make them feel special for a while. It is my delight to do this and so it is no bother to me, rather a joy to spend precious moments in the company of ladies that I don't get to do very often.

My daughter concocted some beautiful rose flavoured cupcakes, and I made plain scones with strawberry jam and cream. Eleven ladies joined us and we all made new friends during the course of the morning. They enjoyed perusing my handicrafts and generously helped me get substantially closer to my monetary goal, purchasing gifts for friends, for Christmas.

I have previously blogged about my handicrafts, which included denim handbags; doily dolls; floral hair clips and all kinds of bunting. I thoroughly enjoyed making all of the items, relishing handling pretty fabrics and listening to good music - all therapeutic for me. I gain great satisfaction from making things, as you will have gathered if you have been reading these entries for long.

It was a success in every way and I look forward to sending he money to the families in various parts of the world.

On Sunday afternoon our daughter treated my husband and I to High Tea at "Creativi tea" in Broadbeach, as a thank you for help that we had given her in recent months. What a lovely venue and what a scrumptious tea! French Earl Grey tea proved a big hit with us, we hadn't tasted it before, delicious flavour and aroma and the food was beautiful, all served on Portmeiron tableware - just gorgeous. we had a splendid time, and recommend it to locals to try.

Together with the Car Boot sale that we attended earlier that day, that I have already told you about, it was a wonderful weekend, just bursting with treats.

On the subject of lovely weekends, its been a real challenge to me this year to try not to focus on the weekend ahead and all the great plans I have when I am not at work, but rather look for the lovely moments to be found and enjoyed between Monday and Friday. If not five sevenths of my life is of no importance or value.

I need to keep working on that, how is it for you, I wonder?

Sunday Morning Joy

In the early hours of yesterday morning, my gorgeous, fun loving, daughter picked me up and we drove to our local, monthly car boot sale, to hunt for treasure together.

The sky was overcast, an advantage when one is looking carefully for treasure.

The park was bursting with sellers and buyers,no doubt due to the fact that Christmas is very soon. I felt all fluttery at the prospect of what lay before us, at what we might discover, and whether we would have enough time to do justice to it all, as I needed to be home, breakfasted and changed ready to depart for church by 8 o'clock. No matter we advanced towards the challenge!

Within moments, my daughter espied a set of attractive, green, retro food scales that we haggled down to twelve dollars. We had enjoyable banter with the European gentleman, who was selling them and we had a good laugh together, leaving them in his care to be picked up later.

We found shabby chic boxed, glass coasters and a set of tins, both new, for very good prices, plus some very attractive butterflies and glittery bird clips for a dollar apiece.

Next came an unexpected discovery, a wooden hat stand, its sections strewn amongst other items laying on a blue tarpaulin. Having bought a couple of these in the past, I recognized the potential here of a great find -YEP- the lady said two dollars when I inquired the price! I calmly, but hastily summoned my daughter and we checked it over and handed over the coin! WOW, What a find. We had wanted one for my daughter's home in the sky and here it was. Armed with these bits of polished timber and our quickly expanding, cumbersome haul, we continued our search.

Whilst wandering around, there was much to delight in, a poodle in a wire basket on wheels; a tiny interestingly dressed, tiny framed lady with a round water melon tucked under each arm; a pile of porcelain divided dishes that looked like strapless bras! People carrying all sorts of items, watering cans, furniture, flowers, food, some Christmas shopping, all making the most of a Sunday morning opportunity to find a bargain.

A pretty, miniature, glass teapot joined our collection, followed by three items of bling, a beaded wire arrangement and a pretty Italian glass bottle and interesting metal tongs, (such as you might use to manouevre sandwiches or cakes). Christmas patterned, paper patty cases, baskets (for a work mate to house her scarf collection) and an attractive square, white serving plate, on which Christmas goodies will look fabulous, all came into our possession. By now, I'm sure you can appreciate time was running out and we were finding things a bit tricky manoeuvring around the crowd without injuring anyone or dropping any of our precious treasure.

We headed for the gate, but didn't quite get there before I saw some beautiful African violets, so I treated ourselves to one each, a traditional violet shade and the other a frilly magenta variety- we will try our hand at keeping them alive!

We returned to our European gentleman, nicknamed Michael Jackson, to pick up the scales and we left the park, delighted at our finds and happy a the lovely time we had spent together.

Like two little kids on Christmas morning we returned to our vehicle to head home for breakfast, laughing as we went.

Here's photographic evidence of that fact.

And here's another of the violet and Italian glass bottle complete with butterfly - just gorgeous!

Hooray for car boot sales!

Making Lemonade From Lemons

I've been a bit preoccupied lately and haven't had a chance to write, but today everything has changed, due to a bit of inspiration and a day off!

My husband and I enjoyed morning tea at a lovely garden centre, not too far away from our home. The cafe therein had truck loads of ambiance that I am very sensitive to and appreciative of.

We tucked into a piece of delicious Italian chocolate cake, accompanied by a cup of coffee and I enjoyed a good look around, noticing the things that made the place so attractive, seeking inspiration for our deck at home.

The centre was bursting with a gorgeous display of Christmas decorations (one of my great delights) and out the front were Balinese flags fluttering in the breeze. I've been considering making some of these for some time but hadn't got started.

On return home, I checked out my fabric stash and found a long piece that I had been given that I had no plans for, and I remembered the clutch of bamboo poles that my husband had garnered from our neighbours hated, intrusive, bamboo hedge. After a few minutes of thought, and a session with my sewing machine, VOILA, I had my version of these pretty flags blowing in the wind in the garden.

So from the dreaded bamboo threat next door and the generosity of a friend giving me the fabric, lemonade came from lemons and I am pretty happy with the result.

Having got the gist of the style, I can see that a visit to Spotlight might be on the agenda to purchase bright shiny fabric to make some more! I'll see!

Have a peep.

More WOW factor

We are the owners of a strap cactus, a flat leafed plant that produces buds once a year. Once the bud opens, the flower lasts one day and then fades and shrivels up. The plant is unremarkable to look at, but it has produced a flower for the last two years.

You need to understand that just about the only kind of pot plant that survives in our care are cacti. We have plant stand at the back of the house on which stand a few pots that used to be home to a variety of Christmas cacti, very pretty plants with lovely flowers in spring.

Living in our vicinity is a variety of bird that makes a racket, they visit regularly bearing various bits of edible bric a brac that they dump in my pots, then proceed to dig around with their substantial beaks and bingo my plants are ousted, and no longer - languishing on the ground - dead! The bric a brac varies from old chop bones to liquorice allsorts and lumps of raw mince. The birds hide them in the pots and come back later for a snack. They even deposit these offerings on a table as if they were going to have a picnic!

I know that I do not have success with pot plants and have reluctantly accepted the fact, but this strap cactus that I mentioned earlier is amazing. In spite of difficult circumstances, it manages to produce an enormous bud and then a sensational flower. Today was the day that the flower would open.

I got up to make the tea this morning and looked out of the window, yesterday the huge bud looked as if it would soon open, and YES, the flower had opened and what a beauty!

Before I made the morning cuppa, I found my camera and raced outside to capture the bloom before it was spoiled by wind or visiting birds. There I was in my pyjamas (again, I do all my best photography in the early morning!)I was able to show the images to my sleepy husband while he sipped his tea.

I share some pics with you of the bud the flower and maybe one of a cheeky bird being eyed by a neighbour's cat!

Beautiful Bunting

When my daughter returned from the UK last year, she brought with her the inspiration of using bunting as a decoration. In the last twelve months I have had a lot of fun making, and pleasure from using and looking at several different styles of bunting.

Our deck is often the venue for for various social gatherings and these decorations have helped to set the scene.

My first attempt was made from pretty floral fabrics to celebrate summer, this was followed by two Christmas lengths in appropriate fabrics; then a black and white themed tea party inspired black and white bunting. Next came a length made from broiderie anglaise with a strawberry pattern to adorn a bedroom in the sky and then a country style with additional lace for a spare room.

I am delighted with the effect achieved by using vintage doilies, a great way to look at these often forgotten, miniature works of art, and to make effective use of my doily stash..

My most recent project was made from a length of Christmas fabric that I acquired from a local car boot sale some months ago. I couldn't think how to use the fabric to best effect and decided to cut round the motives and make bunting in a different shape. I am pleased with the result, I may add some additional adornments nearer to Christmas, which is fast approaching

Finally, for now, some paper doily bunting, that looked very effective hanging on our front fence.

I look forward to further inspiration...

Jacarandas

The Jacaranda trees at the end of our street are in bloom! On Sunday morning before church, I wandered around the park with my camera and captured their beauty, before the blossoms are dislodged by wind and rain.

While these aren't the largest, oldest or finest specimens of this beautiful tree, they are the local ones that I get to enjoy, and so I share them with you.

A few years ago, I penned these words

Jacarandas

Canopies of purple, blossoms all around,
Hanging from the branches, scattered on the ground.
They stand out in country vistas and in cities too -
Delightful in the springtime, giving joy to me and you.

One of my favourite Queensland, springtime blessings, may you find them so too.

Chasing Treasure

A couple of weeks ago we spent a very enjoyable afternoon in the grounds of Bond University, at a Tastes of the Gold Coast function. The weather was beautiful the surroundings very pleasant, it was lovely just to meander around in the sunshine, enjoying the spring afternoon, sipping the odd free wine tasters, listening to good music and soaking up the ambiance.

Amongst the attractions (for me) were the two stilt characters with their buckets of bubble mix, sending beautiful bubbles into the air. If you've been reading my story for any length of time, you will know that I LOVE bubbles. I took lots of photos and totally enjoyed watching children gather around watching the bubbles flying into the air and trying to catch them before they popped.

This got me thinking. How we in our materialistic, western culture chase after things that attract us, only to find at some time, sooner or later, that the attraction dies and we are off chasing the next thing.

I know this is true in my life because I have experienced it all too often. As you may know, I am a keen op shopper, often a shopping expedition will included visits to more than one establishment and, depending on how much treasure I find, and how scattered my thoughts are during the "hunt", by the end of the venture, as I unload the car, I discover stuff that I've forgotten I've bought, or that has been superseded in my thoughts by a subsequent find.
I have found it useful to walk around with a treasure, or even stash it at the counter and re-examine it before settling my bill and in so doing have saved myself some unnecessary, less important purchases.

No doubt this is how materialism works, playing on our unquenchable desire to acquire stuff, whatever form it may take.

What bubbles do you chase?

Wow Factor

Look what I found in my garden this morning! Some red and white striped lilies, how gorgeous! I thought you'd enjoy seeing a snap of some more. They are so happy and cheerful.

What a beautiful day it has been, weather wise and activity wise. I have delighted in spending most of the day in the company of my daughter, she came over this morning in time for coffee, we enjoyed drinking that outside and then she played with her new camera, taking pictures of the garden, making it look sensational, I must say. This afternoon, we co-hosted a jewelry party for Destiny Rescue, a mission that seeks to rescue young girls from slavery and prostitution in various Asian countries. We were delighted to welcome many guests to hear about the mission, view and purchase the jewelry made by the girls and indulge in a spot of afternoon tea on our deck.
It was good for us to reflect on the fact that we live privileged lives in a wonderful country and to open our hearts and purses and get involved helping those in difficult circumstances.

How good it is to build happy memories.

Ice Breakers

Hospital lifts can be pretty unfriendly places, often chock a block with disparate people, from employees to visitors, to actual patients, folk in various emotional states, from elation to desperation and everywhere in between, all keen to firstly get into a lift and then to get out of it as quickly as possible. Rarely a place for fun or conversation as everyone tends to be occupied with their own thoughts.

Having cause this week to visit a friend on the ninth floor of our local hospital, I have made some interesting observations during my journeys to the top.

Funnily enough, following my recent post concerning Hippeastrums, I had cause to smile today, as they figured in my lift experience.

The group gathered in the foyer that I joined didn't wait long for the lift to arrive, however, the group was sizeable and included a lady in a wheelchair and a young woman with a stroller. The sign in the lift stated that it could accommodate up to 23 persons, but it was clear that that wasn't going to happen on this run. I inquired of the lady in the wheelchair as to which floor she was traveling to, on hearing it was the seventh, I offered to go in before her, to save her later inconvenience of her manoeuvering around us.

Having arranged ourselves as best we could and selected all the appropriate buttons, we advanced, quietly, skyward. We were soon joined by some visitors, one of whom was carrying a vase of hippeastrums, cream and red striped and dark red. They were beautiful and so I piped up from the back of the lift and commented on their beauty. The ice was broken and a conversation ensued about a new golden variety that was now available and how this lady had dozens of these amazing flowers blooming in her garden. Lovely how something acted as a catalyst to start interaction between strangers on a different emotional level than that where each was at when they entered the lift.

The ride down, half an hour later, was another interesting one, light banter being entered into, instigated by a group of male visitors with a good sense of humour, which culminated in greetings to 'have a good day' being tossed about as the passengers alighted with smiles on their faces.

I have blogged before about my fascination with the behaviour of groups of strangers thrown together by common circumstances, how fascinating it can be to observe, watching reserve being broken down, by common interest.

Long may we enjoy each others company and make each others lives more pleasant by good interactions as we journey on this earth.

Friday tomorrow, have a great one, keep watching for those lovely flowers

Buds to Beauty

More wonders have been evident in my garden this week.

I never cease to be amazed at the glories of Spring. from seemingly dead plants and trees, wonderful lime green shoots erupt to become new foliage and beautiful blooms burst forth as the temperature starts to rise. Wisteria and Jacaranda spring to mind as two that generally flower before the leaves arrive.

I captured these snaps of Hippeastrums (Barbadoes Lilies) in bud, and a week later in bloom, how glorious they are, something so stunning from such unlikely stalks.

This wonderful season of the year is full of surprises as one moves around the suburbs.
Clusters of these lilies in blood red hues often hidden up against fences and nestled in garden beds, just delightful. The Jacaranda trees at the bottom of our street are beginning to flower, I can't wait, they are one of my favourites.

Blessings abound if we keep our eyes open.
Watch out for Spring surprises.

Dust is My Friend

There was a distinct chill in the house this morning as I entered the kitchen to make the early morning cup of tea. Extra chilly due to the fact that having burnt the toasted sandwiches the night before, all the windows and doors had been left open overnight to try and eradicate the odour that was a result of my faux pas.

Since the curtains were open, the sunlight poured through lounge room window and shone on the glass door of our stereo cabinet. Highlighted in the sunlight, it looked seriously filthy, covered with dust and fingermarks.
Having registered my shortcomings as a housewife, while the jug boiled, I retrieved the glass cleaner from the laundry, tore off a couple of sheets of paper towel and proceeded to clean the offending smears from the glass.

The incident was momentary, the sun soon rose and the dirt became invisible. But it had been exposed, and I felt compelled to remove it, compelled by guilt and awareness of my inattentiveness to regularly cleaning it, "Out of sight, out of mind", I guess. I have other things to do, rather than fuss over housework.

This incident caused me to ponder how this reflects on my life. Just as dust and fingermarks accumulate unseen on the glass door, so sin accumulates in my life. Without the light of God's Word shining on my life, I can overlook my shortcomings and they can build up quickly into serious grim.
It reminded me of what the Bible says about sin, we need to "lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily besets us, and run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith". (Hebrews ch 12 v 1-2). As believers we need to keep short accounts with God. "If we confess our sins, He (Jesus) is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John ch1 v9).

I am so glad that Jesus did it all. He paid the price for me, by giving His life on the cross and taking the penalty of my sin against God, His forgiveness is total and free. I need reminding constantly of this, and not wander off on my own sweet way collecting bad habits and less than pleasing ways, its all too easy to forget my need of forgiveness and repeated cleansing. Just like the glass door with the dust and fingermarks, sin keeps happening, I need to keep up the housework.

The tea was lovely, but, guess what, the sun had moved around a little and, while sitting in bed, sipping my tea, I noticed the dust on the cheval mirror in my bedroom...

I am learning that dust is my friend.

Wishing you a dust free, happy Monday

Early Morning Blessings

I rose early this morning to go for a walk.
Its always a challenge to leave the warmth of my bed, but having made the decision and got going, it proved an enjoyable experience.
A heavy dew had fallen overnight and it covered the ground like a net.

The walk took me through parks, sports grounds and suburban streets. The early morning sunlight shone on the droplets lingering on the grass and sparkled like diamonds - how beautiful, fields of sparkling diamonds, just beautiful!

Willy wagtails danced around in their black and white suits. I find them such joyful birds, they always make me smile as they are so cheeky as they sociably flutter around, dancing attendance like fussy waiters in a posh restaurant.
Birds twittered and sang calling to one another, rejoicing in a new day, and as, always on a morning walk, I felt like the world was my own, albeit briefly.

On return home, the first sip from a hot mug of tea went down a treat and I can now advance into the day having ticked the exercise box feeling invigorated, yet knowing that the walk was so much more than that.

I hope its great day for you.

Spring

My favourite season has (officially) arrived! Spring that wonderful time of new life and hope.
As a garden lover, I find it particularly rewarding to enjoy the delights of discovering shoots appearing on plants that have appeared dead during the winter months. Though I must say that winter in South East Queensland is not to be compare with winter in the northern hemisphere, but it is what I have become accustomed to.

Joy of joys, my Jasmine has produced enough blooms this year to cut and take indoors, Oh, how I love jasmine, the flowers are so pretty and the fragrance is just beautiful, I love waking at night an smelling the fragrance that pervades the house. The azaleas are blooming, such delicate shades and blousey flowers. Already two of our rosebushes are in flower. The glorious spring green is evident on neighbourhood trees and I know that it will only be a matter of weeks before the gorgeous jacaranda trees will come into flower, glorious canopies of purple flowers. I'll photograph them for you when the time comes, once seen never forgotten.

Spring seems particularly poignant for me this year, as we have just experienced a family bereavement. This has caused me to consider afresh the brevity of life and the certainty of death.
Its so easy to breeze through life not giving much thought to what happens after death, after all it seems so unlikely as we dash about managing our busy twenty-first century lives. We expect to wake up in the morning and return home after work. But we are all only a heartbeat away from leaving this place that we call home and it behoves us all to take the time while we have it to consider, and research into this most important and inevitable event. It is something worth time and consideration to examine the big questions for ourselves and not assume that 'she'll be right", or that long time family beliefs will get you to the right place.

Let me share with you some spring blessings from my garden.

Delight in Denim

About ten years ago I discovered the very resourceful talent of making bags from jeans. I have made several tote size bags that have been wonderful to take to work, plenty of space for all the paraphernalia that one might need while away from home. I have found them to be hard wearing functional and attractive.

I am a gal who finds it hard to buy bags. I admire other peoples' and have tried to buy bags for myself, but no, I find it near impossible. I can never decide which colour, what size what fabric etc etc and inevitably, I will leave a shop without one.

Denim jeans have been a delight for me, the pockets provide handy access for mobile phone or keys. I try to select jeans with interesting features at the top, pleats, fancy pockets, even interesting denim, pale dark patterned.

A small denim bag that I made for myself about four years ago from a skirt, has finally worn out after consistent, faithful service, and so I was inspired to create another.

Even though I may be in the mood to create something, I still freeze for periods of time while I consider what and how to incorporate in my new creation. What if I choose the wrong trimming? Could I have made a better selection? Do the colours and textures compliment or blend with each other? This has been my dilemma over the last couple of days, while I tried to bring an idea from my mind into reality.

I used some denim from the jeans that I made "Felicity", the cat doorstop from a while ago. (If you haven't seen the pics, its a stretch, check fabric). I played around with tea dying the lace and had a go at making fabric roses, inspiration for them coming from a craft site on the internet. The lining and pink trimming fabric was in my stash, a treasure obtained from an op shop sortie a couple of years ago. Here are some snaps of my latest creation.

I hope it will prove as enjoyable and useful to use as the one its replacing.

Presentation is Everything

On Sunday afternoon we had the joy and priviledge of sharing afternoon tea with our daughter at her "home in the sky".

(For those of you who have been following the crow story, it is still very active in her street and the tarmac is festooned with all kinds of wiper blade rubbers, what persistence!)

We were served a delicious concoction of meringue, strawberries, whipped cream and liqueur with chocolate sticks. It could have resembled a broken pavlova, which is what the ingredients suggest, BUT NO! it was presented in a black and white, polka dot tea cup and saucer and it looked amazing. It was delicious.
She has such taste and flare, and she is able to turn a simple afternoon cuppa into a special, delightful, memorable occasion.

Here's a snap,

I bet you wish you'd been there!

Have a great day

Handmade Flowers and Daffodils

While pottering on-line recently, I discovered some wonderful inspiration concerning how to make all kinds of fabric flowers.
Fascinated by what I saw, I decided to try my hand at this beautiful floral artistry.

I spent hours over the weekend experimenting, melting various man made fabrics over the flame of a tea light.
What fun! The heat from the flame transformed scraps of material into petal like shapes that can be layered together to great effect. I'm hooked, absolutely delighted with my results. I can imagine the joy that God would have experienced when He created the real deal!

I had to photograph my work in progress beside a lovely vase of daffodils in order to share my delight in both. My flowers may become hair adornments or brooches, or sit together on a plate, who knows, I'll see how I feel when I have finished them.

While working over the flame, I got to thinking how such a small, innocent, beautiful thing could develop into a raging , destructive blaze, especially hearing of the eleven people who perished in a house fire overnight in South Brisbane. My heart goes out to the families and friends of the victims. Fire is not something to be underestimated, or taken lightly.(Yes, I was outside as I worked and I did have a bowl of water nearby).
Credit goes to the folk who inspired such wonderful creations, thank you.

Sunday Morning

While waiting for my roast chicken lunch to cook, I thought I would take the opportunity, to blog about my knitted Liquorice All-sorts!

I have spent some happy moments during this last week knitting a few of these sweet treats each evening, now I have a bowl full to enhance my "faux" food collection.

Aren't they effective? And Calorie free! The amazing scarf is a belated birthday gift from my dear "adopted" daughter in Sydney. Hand crafted in silk and merino wool. I love it!

I spent a few moments, well an hour or so, re-organizing my sideboard on Friday afternoon, humming and Ar-ring what to put where, since my fantasy cake collection has been boxed since Christmas. I thought it was about time I put it back on display to bring smiles to visitors faces and joy to me.

The snap includes my beaded wire "treasure" plus a dish of 'cupcake' style trinket boxes that my daughter presented to me - just delightful. I made the teapot some years ago, when I was first enamoured with the whole "faux" food thing.
Long may it live!

I am again inspired to make some more and am eagerly seeking patterns and inspiration.
Watch this space!

I hope you smile...
